I don't know what this american red squirrel was squinting at, but I'm glad he was not mad at me. Notice the wiskers are visible in the photograph. Also the toes, large and spread out, seem like they must be ideal for keeping a grip on tree bark.

White-Breasted Nuthatch, Male

White-Breasted Nuthatch.

According to Petersons Field Guides the black cap indicates this is a male. Females have a blue cap.

Notice something is in his bill. The following pictures show the same type of object.

Eastern Bluebirds Feeding on Rose Hips

Eastern Bluebird.

This series of pictures is not the best artistically. The light was flat, without much highlight or shadow, and the birds were inside the bushes while the auto-focus on the camera focused on the front of the bush. In some cases the birds were moving. They were also quite far away and cropping them out from a 20x zoom frame for the close-ups encroaches on the limits of the resolution of the camera. Nevertheless I think the activity of the birds here is interesting and worth looking at.

This bluebird is going after something in the rose bush.

It's the rose hips.

The individuals with the bright blue backs are males. The female coloration, shown here, is duller.

There are at least five bluebirds in the flock.

Blue Sparrow

Notice the blue color in this sparrow is not due to a color cast of the shadows. There is brown on the head, back and under the tail which are in the same shadow as the blue parts. Click on the image for the larger picture to see this more clearly. This image was adjusted for brightness and contrast but the colors are the same as in the original image (below).
